The Yankees top catching prospect is 6’4″, 225 Pound, Lefty Power hitting catcher Austin Wells. Their 2020 1st round pick.
A fun tid bit for you… He grew up a Red Sox fan.
He is already literally ALL OF THE TALK around Yankees ST. I have to ask the Question WHY?
SEE:ย
#Yankees catching coach Tanner Swanson just called first-round pick Austin Wells the "gold standard."

He said Wells is more than capable on defense and we've already seen what Wells can do at the plate… His ceiling remains very high, Swanson said.
And this:ย

He’s even facing Yankees #2 Rotation arm Corey Kluber today:

As for which current or former player he most closely compares to is former Yankee backstop Brian McCann and Former Twins backstop Joe Mauer.ย
He has McCann’s power and the some while also having Mauer’s .300+ Average bat and then some.
Also… As with Yankees Current Catcher Gary Sanchez he has a cannon for an Arm. Not quite as good as Sanchez’s though.
Wells projects out to a full season in his prime going off of what others like him did to this:
.313 AVE, 35 HR’s, and 112 RBI’s per. When put in Yankee Stadium and factored for other AL East parks accounting for over 1000 games payed in it sky rockets the HR’s to 51 and RBI’s to 145 in a best season.
He’s that good a hitter.ย
Those stat lines go along with Brain McCann and Joe Mauer’s best before the Yankee stadium spikes.ย
I did some checking and yes the Yankees are more then open to calling him up THIS SEASON to make his BIG LEAGUE debut. Get excited Yankees fans.
