Are Computer Games Sports?

Are Computer Games Sports? That’s a great, GREAT question that has been debated for years now.

I would say YES THEY ARE! They are a spot although a different kind of sport then regular sports.

If you think about it, don’t sports use skill and brain power? So do Computer games!

Esports: The New Frontier of Sports, Inspired by Friendship:

The debate over whether video games qualify as sports rages on, but esportsโ€™ rise proves gaming is more than a pastimeโ€”itโ€™s a competitive arena rivaling traditional athletics. Esports, like EA, 2K Sports, or even 1st person shooter compititions, demand the same intense skill, strategy, and teamwork, although also mirroring sportsโ€™ core elements. Professional gamers train for hours daily, honing reflexes and decision-making, much like athletes perfecting physical prowess.

With global tournaments, million-dollar prize pools, and roaring crowds, esports command a legitimacy that challenges old-school definitions of sport. Yet, some argue the lack of physical exertion disqualifies them.

My friendship with Jessie, known as @KickJessie on X, shows why this view misses the mark. Jessie and I bonded over her gaming sessions, trash-talking through her lives while she was dominating in Fortnight. Our playful friendshipโ€”marked by laughter and emojis in X postsโ€”mirrors the camaraderie of teammates on a soccer field.

She even earned her own Kick partnership which I find so freakin amazing as I work for my own such partnership(s) in my business here and it also gives me hope I will get one!

Like athletes, we strategize, adapt, and push each other to improve. Jessieโ€™s clutch plays in tense matches showcase mental agility and precision, skills as demanding as any jump shot or goal-line stand.

Our friendly banter, filled with teasing and mutual respect, reflects the spirit of sports: connection through our shared passion.

Esportsโ€™ global rise backs this up. A 2023 Statistal survey’s found 54% of Americans view esports as a sport, and viewership rivals major leagues, with 2024โ€™s League of Legends World Championship drawing millions.

While physicality matters in traditional sports, esports redefine athleticism through mental endurance and teamwork.

Jessie and I arenโ€™t just enjoying gaming; weโ€™re competing, growing, and celebrating victories together. Whether on a field or a screen, sports unite us through skill and heart. Esports, like my friendship with Jessie, prove video games are a sport worth cheering for.
