As the New York Yankees chase another AL East crown in 2025, general manager Brian Cashman faces a pivotal offseason. With Juan Soto’s departure still stinging, locking in core talent is essential. WHY HAVE THEY NOT BEEN EXTENDED?
Four playersโJazz Chisholm Jr., Cody Bellinger, Ryan McMahon, and David Bednarโstand out as sure-fire extension candidates. Their seamless integration has fueled a 83-67 record, blending youth, power, and shutdown pitching. Extending them now could secure contention for years.
Jazz Chisholm Jr: Acquired from Miami last year, has blossomed into the Yankees’ dynamic second baseman of the future. THE BETS 2ND BASEBEMAN IN BASEBALL! The 27-year-old switch-hitter boasts speed, flair, and pop, slashing .280/.350/.480 with 20 homers and 25 steals this season. His infectious energy has meshed perfectly with Aaron Judge, and with two arbitration years left, a eight-year, $160 million deal so some feels imminent to keep him pinstriped long-term.
Cody Bellinger: The 2019 NL MVP traded from Chicago this winter, has also rebounded in Yankee Stadium’s short porch. After a down 2024, the 30-year-old outfielder is now hitting .275 with 28 homers and 93 RBIs, rediscovering his pull-side air power. Opting out of his $27.5 million player option, Bellinger seeks a six-year, $189 million extension per reportsโbut only if it includes a no-trade clause for family stability. His lefty bat and Gold Glove defense make him indispensable.
Ryan McMahon: Snagged from Colorado at the deadline, has been a revelation at third base. The 30-year-old’s walk-off heroics in key wins, although not hititng near where the Yankees need him too, his .260 average, 18 homers, and elite defense (Gold Glove caliber) make him the player they need at the hot corner for the next several years. With arbitration eligibility, a five-year, $75 million pact would stabilize the hot corner for years to come.
AND Finally,
David Bednar: The deadline prize from Pittsburgh, he has transformed the bullpen. The 30-year-old closer’s 2.37 ERA and 33% strikeout rate in 38 innings snatched the ninth from Devin Williams whom compareably sucked this year. Although just one arbitration year remains; a three-year, $45 million extension ensures late-game dominance.
These extensions, totaling around $400 million, represent smart investing in proven winners. In Cashman’s words, it’s about “continuity and culture.” With this quartet locked in, Yankee Stadium’s roar could echo for a decade.
